Proofreading for Students

Ethical Proofreading for Dissertations and Theses

Theses and dissertations are subject to strict regulations. They must be all your own work.

That means you need to be careful about how – and by whom – you get your examination texts proofread.

For information and guidance about third-party proofreading for dissertations and theses, download my Brief Guides for Postgraduate Students.

Subject to individual assessment rules and policies, my standard thesis/dissertation proofread covers:

  • correcting typos and errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar
  • correcting/querying inconsistencies of language, capitalisation, and abbreviation
  • checking consistent application of the required citation style and correcting occasional/minor errors
  • correcting inconsistencies in layout and/or formatting, including numbering of footnotes/endnotes and page numbering
  • checking cross-references within the text
  • pointing out issues with clarity and logic flow, to be corrected by the student.

Before quoting a price for proofreading your dissertation or thesis, I will request a sample of the text, which I will proofread for you free of charge. This helps me estimate how long the job is likely to take, and thereby calculate the cost. It also shows you what you’ll get if you hire me.

I am on the Register of Approved Proofreaders for Royal Holloway, University of London – look for Lucy Nevitt on the register and get in touch.

All my work is confidential and guided by the CIEP Code of Practice so you can be confident that you’re getting a high standard of professional, ethical service.
